7:00 p.m.- Debussy V: Poet of the Avant-Garde
The 24 Preludes have, with their modernity and innovative style, opened the way forward for composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Written between 1909 and 1913, the piano Preludes express the troubled emotional atmosphere prevalent in Europe before the First World War. Working at the peak of his powers, Debussy succeeded in creating a unique climate of transcendent poetic inspiration in each of the miniature works. The pianist Hugues Leclère plans to illuminate this musical heritage of Debussy's two books of Preludes by juxtaposing them with 22 modern compositions; works mainly by the foremost French composers, who represent the most important contemporary trends, but also by the American James Wintle, and the young British star, Thomas Adès. Both books of 12 Preludes interwoven with modern works make up a program lasting 3 and a half hours.
This evening’s program features a themed intermission that includes an elaborate culinary reception by chef Lance Nitahara & Presentation by parfumeur Christophe Laudamiel who will awaken senses you may have never used listening to a concert. Debussy himself wrote in 1903 that “an instrumental preparation where the perfume of the harps mixes itself with the lemon scent of the oboes, bathed in the juices of string sonorities and interrupted by pauses, in which the captured audience releases its sighs, guarantees the demand of an encore.”
